If you were alive between the years 1969 and 1971, and you knew someone who owned a television set, chances are pretty good that the line "I'm a-pickin", followed by "and I'm a-grinnin", sounds somewhat familiar to you. Yep. I am not ashamed to admit the Moss clan caught an episode or two of Hee-Haw in it's heyday.
I was transported back there this weekend at the Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships in Lawrence. In addition to dancing and toe-tapping, there was some mighty fine playing. Even if Buck Owns and Roy Clark weren't there.
People bring their chairs or blankets and settle in for a spell. There might be bubbles to make and popsicles to eat and special occasion hats to wear too.
But mostly it's about the music, and watching people enjoy the music, in whatever way makes the most sense to them.
