If you haven't read "Blood, Bones, and Butter" by Gabrielle Hamilton get yourself to the public library or favorite bookstore and get it. If you spend anytime in a place where you can listen to it - so much the better. It is read by the author and she has a great reading voice. I just pulled the last CD out and I am done.
As I was listening I kept thinking "hey I know what you mean". I love the way she imitated the accent of her husband, and hearing her speak Italian, and talk about the deep affection she has for her mother in law, Alda. My mother in law Eleanor was no great cook but her fried chicken gravy was unrivaled and she introduced me to the pleasure of just cut asparagus cooked to perfection. I so enjoyed the hours I spent at her table eating Sunday dinners talking and conspiring.
As I listened I was also reminded of my childhood cooking experiences with my older sister, Dottie. Figuring out how we could turn leftover baked beans into the perfect after school snack if we added a touch of this and a hint of that. This book taps into these common experiences and just pulls you along. Listen Gabrielle, I hate to be a pest but can you call me so I can find out what has happened since you finished the book? I feel like after you spent 10 hours with me in the car we are friends.
Oh my stars...another good recommendation. I shall add this to my list. I just need time to read!
