If you want to get strawberries at the farmers market in Lawrence, you best get there by 0730. That's what I was told by someone in my knitting class who knows about these things. Today I left the house at 7:10am.
I elbowed my way through the pack of people swarming the table and snapped up a basket. Do you think all people that sell strawberries look wholesome and cute? Maybe it comes from eating lots of berries.
I looked around at all the other booths at the market while I was there. There is always lots to see.
But truth be told I just wanted to get home with my basket. This one right here.
Fresh picked strawberries are one of the greatest pleasures in life. Rich and red and juicy all the way through. Greek yogurt sprinkled with a little brown sugar make good breakfast accompaniements.
Along with coffee, toast, and the newspaper - I can't think of a better way to start the weekend.

A splendid spring/summer dessert: a fresh strawberry, dipped in sour cream and then into brown sugar. Great travel or picnic food! And if you can manage to offer a glass of iced gewurztraminer wine with it, you will be putting forth a classic al fresco treat which was standard at brit universities forty years ago (and maybe even now.) "Brideshead Revisited" revisited!!!!

The strawberry is king of fruit as far as I'm concerned, followed closely by watermelon. The sight and smell of either sends me over the moon...I really feel for those who are allergic to strawberries, they are missing a little bit of heaven on earth. How could you only buy one basket though? How about some strawberry ice cream, shortcake, jam???? With that bounty available from those adorable kids...how could you resist?
