The husker red penstemon is blooming right now. They are a sturdy lot. No staking required. Drought tolerant. Very low maintenance.
I moved one of these plants from my old house when we built our new home. Over the last 7 or 8 years the birds and the bees and the wind have caused them to spread in a most pleasing fashion. The dark foliage is a nice contast to all the greens.
When the last iris blooms it is their signal to pick up the reigns and take over as the flower of prominence in the garden. If they get out of control they are not difficult to pull up.
If this grows in your area, and you currently don't have any, I highly recommend you add a plant to your garden.
I will definitely look into this. Great plant. Thanks for the great shots and post!

I love Husker Red and mine are blooming now. I also have a lovely pink penstemon (the variety escapes me at the moment) that looks to be a vigorous bloomer.
