In looking through my Instagram feed of our time on Lummi Island, I realize there is a lot of blue and a serious lack of green. There are however, 3 preserves on the island that have some lovely opportunities for hiking. I checked them all out while we were there.
It's pretty nice to be able to walk through dark, cool, shaded woods that are absolutely quiet except for the sounds of birds and the breeze through the trees. Maybe a deer watching us. Or not.
The Baker preserve hike was a bit challenging with a steep ascent to start. It's a good trail though and you can stop and rest as needed. A hiking stick for the descent would also be helpful to prevent an unintended tumble down the last quarter mile.
At the top there are some pretty spectacular views. I recommend filling up your eyes when you get to the overlook.
I had the place to myself when I was there. Sheer heaven.
On the way down I ran into a future biologist who was collecting specimens while hiking with his grandparents... who happen to live on the island. I picked up a fern to draw but left all slugs to him.
If you find yourself on the island, without a map, I am supplying this highly accurate depiction which includes the locations of all the preserves. You're gonna want to explore them.
Wonderful! ♥

So lovely, to find places where all you can hear is nature's sounds.
Getting away from people's noise Noise NOISE is so ... renewing.

Beautiful scenery! And I, too, would have left the slugs to others.

I prefer my slugs garden clog size, so I can dispatch them with one well-shod foot. I will be up all night tonight having nightmares of slugs big enough to fight back.
