If you have a package of dates laying around in your pantry, that you have been meaning to transform into something, but have been waiting for a new recipe to try. You may want to give these date bars a whirl.
They are crunchy and slightly sweet, with a hint of lemon.
The date filling sits atop a shortbread crust that is perfectly crisp.
And it's all covered by a crunchy topping with just a hint of saltiness.
They remind me of something my sister and I would have selected and enjoyed with a cup of tea in an outdoor cafe in Istanbul.
The date filling is not overly sweet and has a very pleasant thick jam texture. Which is to be distinguished from an annoying sticky, caught in your teeth kind of filling. It is NOT that.
High marks for this one. I might add a few walnuts to the topping next time. Otherwise, no changes to the recipe.
Looks great! That reminded me of the video Mary Ann took in Istanbul, which you were both at a sidewalk cafe. She captured the daily life movement and the call to prayer in one delicious video. I think my favorite video of all time.
