I just finished listening to The Splendid and The Vile, by Erik Larson. It's about Winston Churchill and his role as the Prime Minister during the London blitz between May 1940 and 1941. It reads like historical fiction. By that I mean that it feels like a "story" but is actually derived from journal, diaries, and other factual documents from the time.
The inclusion of first hand accounts from Mass-Observation diarists was especially engaging - how people were feeling and reacting to the bombings as they tried to go about their regular lives. My knowledge of Winston Churchill prior to this was very limited. Reading about his quirky habits/personality was quite interesting as was getting to "know" some of his family members and others in his inner circle.
Of all the quotes attributed to the Prime Minister, the one I found especially enjoyable, was this one I had never heard before ... "one of the secrets of a happy marriage is never to speak to or see the loved one before noon".
Good read.
Great quote. Sounds like a good one.
