End of December sunset, captured by Chris.
Today the most productive thing I did was to practice making a French 75. To be sure the recipe didn't need fine tuning before tomorrow night (it did not). Chris and I will be spending a quiet New Years Eve at home, like we do every single year. But that is no reason not to have a special drink and toast.
I used this recipe because it called for Cognac and I just happened to find a bottle in the back of my liquor cabinet the other day when I was looking for brandy for a peanut butter brandy alexander, which is another story for another time. This recipe is lovely. Light and lemony but not too tart, bubbly and festive. It goes quite well with a nutty Spanish manchego and smokehouse almonds if you happen to have those on hand. If not, popcorn is perfect.
The first time I had a French 75 was at Il Centro, a Kansas City "original" restaurant. A few years later I had one at Cafe Provence, another restaurant unique to Kansas City. Every time I sip one, I recall the friends, food, aromas, laughter, and overall ambiance of those times. A perfect reason to select this drink to bid farewell to 2020 and hello to 2021. Even though my friends will not be with me, I carry them with me, in spirit.
Wishing you the best in 2021.
