If you want to sit down with a former president and have a direct conversation about what it's like to be the leader of the United States of America, without having to get dressed up, or feel awkward/uncomfortable. You will want to read A Promised Land. Even better to listen to in my opinion.
With an intermingling of stories about family, the ridiculous world of politics, details behind significant events of the first 4 years of his presidency - including finance, healthcare, immigration, climate change, foreign policy, it is informative on many levels. I don't begin to understand how we can change our contentious political system, but listening to this provided an increased awareness of what a screwed up process in can be at times. Very highly recommended.
Full disclosure: it's long - 28 1/2 hours.
I held it in my hand with his voice well established in my head. It was a balm between the election and January 20th.
