I finished City of Girls this week and found it, in the end, to be quite a satisfying listen. It's been on my list for awhile but when my college roommate told me she liked it, I decided to get started on it. Initially, before I really got into the story, I wanted to tell Elizabeth Gilbert to "kill her darlings" to quote Stephen King. In other words, eliminate some of those phrases that don't really advance the story but are there because they are clever. But after a while she either stopped, or it didn't bother me anymore, because I got over being annoyed.
This is the story of Vivian Morris and her move to NYC in the 1940's. It is from the perspective of someone looking back on their life and being able to see how all the pieces fit together, in retrospect. A perfect summer read if you are looking for something to fit that bill.
