MY latest seasonal refreshment comes courtesy of the NYT summer cooking section. I find it best served in a tall canning jar with a lid. Because it just seems better that way. Why? I don't know. Why does anything taste better in a canning jar? Because it seems nostalgic? Because you have to do something with all those jars?
Here's the REAL truth... when you are loading up your hands with a Vietnamese Iced Coffee, phone, iPad, matches to light the candle, and journal to take out to the front porch and you believe it is important to do it in one trip (who doesn't) and you also need to unlock the door, having a lid on your beverage is super smart. Trust me on this.
This iced coffee drink is sweet, creamy, and boldly satisfying. The good thing is if it's too sweet for you, just add some more coffee. If it's not sweet enough, spoon in some more sweetened condensed milk.
The other great thing is when your glass is empty, you can walk right inside and get a refill. Or a half a refill. You are the boss of your refill requirement. It might also be good with a sprinkle of cinnamon, or some cardamom?
About 10 or so years ago (can it really be that long), Sister and I went over to Jeanette Sclar's house in Kansas City for a garden tour and she made us one of these. I've never forgotten it, but didn't think to try making one myself until the recipe in the NYT last weekend triggered that taste memory. It is now fully lodged into the summer of 2021 morning porch beverage rotation.
Looks and sounds heavenly! I just got some Jar Jackets that fit on those 12oz quilted jars and they help make them easier to grip. Got them for the quart size, too. When your hands are old and arthritic like mine, it's important to be able to securely hold those wonderful jars while walking outside to enjoy your coffee. Thanks for sharing.

Jeanette: I have an extremely good memory when it comes to food and drink. I wish it were that good about other things. Clearly I have my priorities straight.
