My deepest thanks to the Scott County Library System in Eldridge, Iowa for letting me borrow the 3rd installment of the Maisie Dobbs series - Pardonable Lies. I like to listen to these books on my commute to and from work. Having a way to access them through the public library is so great, it almost feels like a secret privilege I am somehow getting away with. I like to imagine walking into all of these libraries from whom I have obtained books over the years and giving them each a check for some exorbitant amount of money, because I could, and because I so appreciate them.
But back to the business at hand. This installment, 3 of (I think) a total of 17, does not disappoint. New aspects of Maisie are discovered as her work and life continue to develop. As always, there is the historical aspect to these stories that is interesting especially when uncovered in the light of a group of characters. I am not sure how far into the future this series will go, and truth be told, I really don't want to know. I am perfectly happy just letting things unfold page by page.
This book has Maisie searching for the truth about what happened to 2 men who never returned from WWI. Did they die as their families were led to believe? Good story, wonderful characters, charming settings. Recommended.
Jacqueline Winspear wrote a recently published a very interesting biography titled "This Time Next Year We'll Be Laughing". The Wall Street Journal even had a half page article about it. Of course, there are many parallels between her family life and the Maisie books. As a fan of Maisie from the beginning, I was fascinated with her story and the connections to the history, events and characters in her books. Highly recommended for all Maisie fans.

I send a thank-you postcard to libraries that let me borrow their books from afar.
:-)
Our interlibrary loan is only in Michigan. I've never gotten a book from Iowa. :-)
