There were not many vendors or shoppers at the market this morning when I went. I did however, find everything I needed, and then some. Most importantly they had the perfect pie pumpkins, which will be eaten, after they are written on by our turkey day guests... a listing of the things they are thankful for. I got two in case I take up all the space on the first one.
I had a nice chat with my favorite baker, about how he is looking forward to a break after the holiday market. Even bakers need time to rest and recharge their batteries. Isn't it interesting how we sometimes "romanticize" a career that we think would be "fun", somehow not thinking about how hard that work is too?
I wasn't going to get a piece of cake this morning, planning instead to stock up on a few scones to freeze and have later in the winter. But then we started talking about cranberries and oranges and adding things to a cake, and the tartness of cranberries... and before you know it, a slice was cut, packaged and in my basket.
It's the last market of the season! Of course I had to have a piece.
I was so happy to see this farmer with her greens back this week. Bags of mixed lettuces and kale were snapped up.
How interesting are these radishes? She told me they are generally used for pickling - or maybe it was fermenting?
The pumpkins came from this farmer who had the most interesting tomatoes too.
These cabbages had me thinking of pork roast and Blau Kraut - think red cabbage, bacon, apples, onion... all cooked together with some red wine and apple cider vinegar. Marilyn gave me the recipe from her German teacher years ago, it's a keeper.
This group was only too happy to oblige when I asked them to "wave goodbye" for the last market post of the season.
I will miss popping out of bed bright and early on Saturday mornings, but April is going to be here again in the blink of an eye. Until then, I shall perfect soup recipes and work on my own baking skills.
Tonight I will say this cake was very good. The frosting tasted like an orange creamsicle, the cranberries were tart, the cake was moist.
In other words, I enjoyed every bite. Which is exactly as it should be. Especially when our hot water heater seems to be on the fritz. Who can worry about stuff like that with a mouth full of orange/cranberry splendor?
