My latest listen on the commute to and from work, has been The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls. She narrated this audio version as well. Maybe you read her 2005 memoir The Glass Castle, about growing up with a mom and a dad with very different ideas about raising children, as well as some mental health issues. When discussing this with a friend I could not remember if it was a true story or a novel, because some parts of it are so unbelievable. But it is in fact, as noted above, a memoir. This story, in a similar fashion, focuses on 2 sisters growing up with a mom who is struggling to "find herself", and leaves the girls (ages 12 and 15) on their own quite a bit.
It is a bit formulaic, but somehow that didn't bother me too much. I guess there are just seasons in life when you want to read something with a beginning, middle, and end. A story where issues are mostly resolved though there is still room for a whole lot of guessing about how life turns out for "Bean" and her sister Liz. This is a good story to listen to in the car on a cross country trek. It will hold your interest but not have you going off the road with unexpected twists and turn.
