This was recent hike at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, where parts of the trail are paved, others are not. It feels removed from the city except for the occasional traffic noise, and best of all, it's never crowded. There are plenty of areas that go up and down to get the ticker pounding and to keep the knee's in shape, but you take it at your own pace. I love how the sky changes so much even in the course of one hour on a morning hike.
The temperatures were cool but not blustery on this morning, which meant I was not scurrying along. There was time to admire the stacked stone fence, twirling leaves from a sawtooth oak, the occasional call of a red bird, the crunching as my feet moved over the path through the leaves. All in all a perfect way to start the day.
